Youth Workshop: The Janet Collins Story

Join the Mary Baker Eddy Library for February School Vacation Week!

Learn about the inspiring story of Janet Collins, the first African American prima ballerina to dance at the Metropolitan Opera. Janet’s story teaches us that we can be anything we set our minds to—even if we don’t think we’re the current model for success. The Library will present Sweet Blackberry’s short film Dancing In the Light: The Janet Collins Story, followed by a Q&A session. Afterward, join Passus, the Harvard University stepping team, to learn some dance moves! Space is limited—be sure to sign up early.

Recommended for ages 5-12.

Workshop registration:

• All children must be registered to participate in daily workshops.

• Although all children must be accompanied by an adult chaperone, workshop registration is for children only—please do not include adults in your final registration count.

• All registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Spaces fill quickly and have limited seating.

• For cancellations please contact the Library’s Educational Programs Coordinator prior to the event at palladinom@mbelibrary.org or 617-450-7203. Timely cancellations allow the Library to make this educational opportunity available to other groups and families.

Visiting the Library:

• Please plan to arrive 15 minutes early for a workshop. This will ensure that Library staff can accommodate all our visitors.

• All workshops meet in the Library’s Gallery.

• Art activities do not require registration. Please feel free to join in them at your convenience. They meet in the Publishing House Lobby.

• During vacation week, all activities—including Mapparium tours—are free for everyone ages 17 and younger.

Groups

• We strongly suggest that groups of 10 or more (including chaperones) sign up in advance here for a Mapparium tour.

• To register groups of 10 or more, please contact the Library’s Group Tour Coordinator at groupvisits@mbelibrary.org.

• Free bus parking is available for up to three hours on Huntington Avenue westbound, adjacent to the Christian Science Plaza. Drop-off at Library entrance. Please do not idle buses on Huntington Avenue.

Directions and parking:

• Find driving and public transportation directions to the Library here.

• Limited $14 garage parking is available to Library visitors with ticket validation. Please validate your parking ticket at the reception desk when you leave the Library. You must exit the garage within 20 minutes of the time your ticket is validated.

• Entrance to the underground parking garage is near the intersection of Huntington and Massachusetts Avenues, next to Horticultural Hall (enter on Huntington westbound or Massachusetts northbound).
