Week Introductory course @ Sew Modest Sewing and Design Studio

This class is great for beginners who have no prior sewing experience and those who need a refresher course that includes the basics of sewing machine maintenance.

Have fun designing your own fully customized garment!! Select your desired template and then customize it by choosing the silhouette, length, sleeve & neckline.

We use a CAD "Computer Aided Design" program to create the pattern for your design according to your custom measurements. (over $50 value) This ensures a perfect fit and a great pattern that can be reused countless times.

Meeting Times:

Wednesdays July 8th - August 5th 6:00PM to 9:00PM.

Cost:

$150, this includes all machinery, hand tools and customized CAD printed patterns. Fabric is not included; you can purchase it from us or bring your own.

Course Outline:

Class will start and end promptly according to the schedule; Students may arrive no more than 20 minutes before the scheduled start time. Being late for class will result in you missing critical instruction that we may not have time to review.

Over the 5 week course we will complete 2 projects as outlined below:

Week 1: Orientation, Sewing Basics, Practicing Basic Stitches

• Orientation – Establish class culture/rules, overview of space, tools and machines

• Sewing basics – basic overview of the parts and mechanics of the sewing machine, threading, bobbin loading, adjusting thread tension, length/width and a basic straight stitch.

• Talk about fabric selection for beginners and common types of fabric.

• Practicing Basic Stitches - Student will complete a series of stitch patterns to practice getting the perfect stitch: (1) stitch perfectly follows the drawn line. (2) Stitch upper and lower tension is well balanced with no loops or gaps. (3) Stitch is strong and durable with backstitching at the beginning and the end.

• Create a small to mid-size wallet or hand bag, with pockets and top stitching.

• Take body measurements for garment project.

Weeks 2 - 5: Design and Sew your Customized Garment

• Learn how to read a commercial sewing pattern

• Review common sewing concepts such as fabric grain and cutting on a bias

• layout, cut and sew your customized design.
