Wasted! The Story of Food Waste/Nari Kye and Anna Chai/2017/90 min/Waste

Wasted! The Story of Food Waste aims to change the way people buy, cook, recycle, and eat food. Through the eyes of chef-heroes like Anthony Bourdain, Dan Barber, Mario Batali, Massimo Bottura, and Danny Bowien, audiences will see how the world’s most influential chefs make the most of every kind of food, transforming what most people consider scraps into incredible dishes that create a more secure food system. WASTED! exposes the shamefulness of food waste and how it’s directly contributing to climate change and shows how each of us can make small changes – all of them delicious – to solve one of the greatest problems of the 21st Century.

Compost Happens/Katie Spear/2017/3 min/Food-Agriculture

PREMIERE. For about 5 years, Loyola University has promoted the Campus Compost Collective (aka Bucket Program). Faculty, staff, and students sign up to receive air-tight buckets for food scraps which they can empty at convenient locations each week. Loyola is taking the lead among colleges and universities in this important area, transforming waste into something good. Loyola also diverts excess food to soup kitchens and food pantries. It's all part of the Jesuit tradition of social justice.

After both films, engage in a discussion about waste with Mary Allen of the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County and the Illinois Food Scrap Coalition; Loyola student and waste and recycling coordinator Lucy Anderson; Bailey Warren, Co-Founder of Zero Waste Chicago; Martin Brown of the Delta Institute; and Craig Mitchell of Care for Our Common Home. Come away with ideas and tips for reducing your waste at home. Facilitator: Jim Haried, Partner at Environmental Resources Management.
