OVERVIEW | Through this first-of-its-kind program we guide you through the process of refreshing your organizational narrative structure (getting beyond issues & solutions to a more effective framework), bringing it to life with compelling visual storytelling ideas and discovering best-practices for story scouting & creative collaboration.

METHODOLOGY | In this workshop we apply the very same methodology that we have iterated on over the course of producing hundreds of micro-documentaries in 30+ countries for some of the most celebrated purpose-driven organizations in the world.  The program is composed of 3 main phases:

  1. Drafting a More Engaging Organizational Narrative Framework

  2. Bringing your Framework to Life Through Visual Stories

  3. Becoming a more Confident Creative Collaborator

3 PHASES

PHASE 1 | Drafting a More Engaging Organizational Narrative Framework

Before you start working on specific stories, you want to make sure you have a good draft of your overall narrative framework – for your purpose-driven organization or your movement.  And there’s a specific emphasis that you want to give to this framework.

We will review the typical frameworks that are used in telling many of the stories that we are exposed to and explore a framework that is better suited for advancing purpose-driven movements.  An issue-leading framework tends to depress audiences because of the over-emphasis of issues in the news. However, a solution-leading framework is problematic as well, because it has been over-used in the commercial world.  When you lead with your solution, you risk putting your audience on guard by making them feel like you’re try to sell them something.

Our approach seeks to go beyond issues and solutions to emerge with a framework that is an invitation for your audience, that stimulates curiosity and wakes up their creativity.  The intention is to update your organizational narrative framework, so that you can build a stronger case for support for your mission.

YOU WALK AWAY WITH |  An Updated Organizational Narrative Framework

Your framework will provide the context for your stories. The relationship between a framework and a story is a bit like that between a Christmas tree and the ornaments. The framework is the tree - and the stories are the myriad colorful figures that will light it up.  In Phase 1, we focus on the tree.

A natural place for your Framework is on the landing page of your visual stories, in your film descriptions, or on your blog.   Including it in your media pitches will also make it a lot easier for bloggers and journalists to write about your films and other visual stories and to place them in context in an editorial way for their audience.

PHASE 2 | Bringing your Framework to Life Through Visual Stories

With your organizational framework updated it’s time to turn our attention to the visual stories that will bring it to life.  In this phase we explore the most helpful stories for a purpose-driven organizations and brainstorm how they could translate for your particular situation.

YOU WALK AWAY WITH |  A List of Compelling Visual Story Ideas

Together, we will generate a list of ideas and rank them based on specific cinematic criteria to ensure that the stories will translate well visually.  We will demystify the anatomy of a compelling short film and you will learn how to best express, rank and prioritize your story ideas.

PHASE 3 | Becoming a more Confident Creative Collaborator

Becoming a more confident creative collaborator puts you in a better position to get the best visual stories from photographers, filmmakers and other visual professionals.

YOU WALK AWAY WITH |   Detailed Creative Collaboration Guidelines

In this phase we provide you with specific guidelines that have resulted from the production of hundreds of films in related to how to best collaborate with professional photographers and filmmakers.

“It was fantastic to be presented with a relatively simple framework from which we can scout and create the kind of stories that will better engage our audiences. The course was very action-oriented, with content and tools to help better understand the effective elements to building a powerful visual story. I am feeling much more confident that I will be able to better guide our vendors and clients to produce effective films. Fascinating also that this framework can be applied loosely to storytelling in all forms of collateral.”

- Elise Carlaccini, Creative Producer & Project Manager, University Development and Alumni Development and Alumni Relations, UCSF
