Institute on Aging welcomes you to a free, 2-hour training at 3575 Geary Blvd., San Francisco, CA 94118, presented by IOA’s own Patrick Arbore, EdD.  Continuing Education credit will be offered.

This training, Caring for Those Who Suffer: Vicarious Trauma, Secondary Trauma, Stress,  Compassion Fatigue, and Burnout, will explore the nature, dynamics and risks of vicarious and secondary trauma for any professional or volunteer working with older or younger adults who have experienced diverse trauma. The emotional and psychological needs of those who serve the suffering will be the focus. Dr. Arbore will review practical strategies for increasing capacity towards managing the impact of trauma experiences on those who care for the suffering.

Informed by current research, the training will provide participants with knowledge, skills, and tools for recognizing the signs of vicarious trauma, burn-out, and compassion fatigue, so that quality care may continue to be provided to clients and others being served.

This workshop will be appropriate for all those in aging services, including: psychologists; family therapists; social workers; case managers; nurses; elder-law practitioners; fiduciaries; long-term care administrators; gerontologists, human resources professionals and family/professional caregivers.

As a result of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Define vicarious trauma is and how it impacts those who serve those who are suffering
  2. Recognize at least 3 key differences between burnout and vicarious trauma
  3. Identify at least 4 signs of compassion fatigue
  4. Implement at least 3 strategies that can reasonably be utilized in day-to-day work with clients and others who have experienced trauma.

YOUR INSTRUCTOR: 

Patrick Arbore, EdD, is the Founder of The Friendship Line and Director of the Center for Elderly Suicide Prevention and Grief Related Services (CESP)—both programs at Institute on Aging. Dr. Arbore conducts workshops and presents lectures, locally and nationally, on grief, end-of-life and aging-related subjects. He is the author of numerous articles and book chapters on suicide prevention, bereavement, and suffering, including a chapter he co-authored entitled “Suffering and the Caring Professional” in When Professionals Weep: Emotional and Countertransference Responses in End-of-Life Care, 2nd Edition (2016), and “Suicide Prevention Among Rural Older Adults” in Generations: Journal of the American Society on Aging, Summer 2019, 43(2), p 62-65.  Dr. Arbore is a 2014 Jefferson-Award winner, as well as a 2016 Norma Satten Community Service Innovation Award recipient.

Date: Tuesday, March 31, 2020, 12:30 p.m.- 2:30 p.m. Doors to the training will open at 11:45 a.m. The program will begin on time, so please be prompt.

Directions and Parking: Limited street parking around the building, in mostly 2-hour increments. Public transportation is nearby, with the Geary bus running right in front of the building.

Cost: No charge, but RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED.

Introductory Level: No knowledge of the specific content area is required—you need not have in-depth knowledge or skills. The activity will provide information in accordance with basic knowledge of the topic.

All Continuing Education certificates will be delivered digitally, within 5 working days of the event. An evaluation-test will be provided to all CE registrants, who must then attend the entire program and turn in their evaluation at the end of the program in order to qualify for a CE certificate.

American Psychological Association (APA): Institute on Aging is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Institute on Aging maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN), Provider # CEP13610, for 2.0 Contact Hours.

CAMFT: Institute on Aging is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for this program. IOA maintains responsibility for the course and its content. Course meets the qualifications for 2.0 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs.
