Vanport: The Surge of Social Change
Exhibit part of the Vanport Mosaic Festival
May 27th- June 13th

This exhibit documents the social life of the largest WWII shipbuilding community in the United States. Situated between the cities of Portland, OR, and Vancouver, WA, this multi-racial but segregated community forever changed the social fabric of these neighboring cities. The exhibit features historic photos, artifacts, and objects that provide insight into the daily life of wartime workers and their families, in addition to haunting images of the 1948 Memorial Day flood, which displaced 12,000 people and wiped out one of the few inclusive housing option for people of color, the exhibit celebrates a resilient community's fight to establish their roots in Portland.

Vanport: The Surge of Social Change is presented by Oregon Black Pioneers, A Fourth Act, and Vanport Mosaic, and will be open in tandem with Cottonwood in the Flood performance days one hour before the show begins at IFCC.

Part of the Vanport Mosaic Festival 2016. The Festival is made possible by generous support from Oregon Heritage Commission, Oregon Humanities,The Oregon Community Foundation, North Portland Neighborhood Services. Sponsored by: Port of Portland, The Multnomah County Drainage Districts, Rooted Investing, Oregon Historical Society, and The Delta Park Center. Special thanks to our partners: Concordia University, Portland Community College - Cascade, Portland Parks and Recreation

We are thrilled to share artifacts from Vanport as part of Vanport: The Surge of Social Change exhibit, from May 27th to June 12th at Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center, as part of the Vanport Mosaic Festival. The objects come from the collection of Terri Johnson, who for over 20 years has been digging out and saving artifacts on the land where Vanport once stood. Make sure to attend one of the 3 screenings of oral history Lost City, Living Memories: Vanport through the voice of its residents to hear her story.
