 In 2018 nearly 26,575 people were released from North Carolina prisons. Best estimates tell us 50% likely suffer from a substance use disorder. An additional barrier is lack of health insurance for the majority of this population. Additionally, recently released individuals are 74 times more likely than the general population to die of a heroin overdose in the first 2 weeks post-release. Education about substance use is important.  Treatment works and can reduces crime and recidivism.

Behaviors and history of substance misuse can have important implications for justice involved individuals successful transition back to the community. This session will highlight two 2 main goals:

  1. Understanding Substance Use Disorders – Prevention, Treatment & Recovery

  2. Understanding Opioid Dependence & Medication Assisted Treatment

This session is facilitated by Kenny House.  Kenny is a Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist and Certified Clinical Supervisor with over 35 years of experience in the Substance Use and Mental Health field.  He has been involved in program development that has covered a wide range of services - from Prevention to Outpatient Treatment for both adult and adolescent populations, and more recently, to integrating primary care with behavioral health.  Kenny is the Vice-President of Clinical Services for Coastal Horizons and currently the Chairperson of the NC Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence, a Board member for Cape Fear HealthNet, TIDES, the LINC-NHC Local Reentry Council, and represents North Carolina on the Board of the American Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Carpooling is suggested. There is limited parking in front, back and side of building. If you park on Market Street, please be prepared to walk at least 1-2 blocks.
