At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
Identify recent FDA drug communications, including but not limited to, labeling changes, warnings, new indications, new dosage forms and MedWatch alerts.
Discuss the new drugs with respect to their pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, approved and unapproved indications.
Describe their adverse effects and drug interaction that may affect patient compliance.
Compare efficacy, dosage and cost to existing agents.
Discuss the patient oriented outcomes or evidence that may or may not exist for each of the new medications and when they may or may not be appropriate to recommend for selected patients.
Compare pharmacotherapy outcomes vs cost/benefit between newly approved agents and existing or lower cost agents.

The Opioid Epidemic in 2020(3hrs) :
Describe the current data on the use and abuse of opioids in the US.
Assess patients accurately with pain for consideration of an opioid trial.
Establish realistic goals for pain management and restoration of function.
Initiate and titrate opioid treatment (IR and ER/LA) safely and judiciously, maximizing efficacy while minimizing risks.
Monitor and re-evaluate treatment continuously; discontinue safely when appropriate.
Counsel patients and caregivers about use, misuse, abuse, diversion and overdose.
Educate patients about safe storage and disposal of opioids.
Pharmaceutical Pricing 2020 (2hrs)
Estimate the costs to develop a new chemical or biologic medication in the US and what the costs for selected marketed brand name, generic, and biologic medications;
Describe the role(s) of Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBM’s) and the Pharmaceutical Industry in drug pricing;
Describe the reasons that the cost of many medications are increasing at a rate that is much higher than the Consumer Price Index over the last 10 years;
Develop appropriate alternative, cost-effective, evidence-based drug regimens utilizing the specific preferred formulary options or generics when they may be less cost to the patient than preferred co-pays.
