Every writer wants to take readers on a journey that is compelling, unexpected, and emotionally powerful. But how can you create a structure for your story that keeps readers engaged? And how do you create a plot that feels organic rather than prescribed?

In this workshop, we’ll look at how to use the deeper ideas in a story to direct the shape of its telling. We’ll study innovative storytelling techniques from both fiction and creative nonfiction, reading work from Carmen Maria Machado, Daniel Woodrell, Pam Houston, and others as we learn how decisions about voice, perspective, tone, and genre affect the shape of a story.

During the course of the six-week workshop, each student will also submit one story to be discussed in class and will receive thorough and insightful feedback on how to re-shape their piece in revision.

This is a small, supportive workshop that fosters an encouraging and motivating environment for writers of all levels.

Writers in this class can expect to:

  • learn how to make plot an organic outgrowth of a story’s characters and themes

  • master new techniques for enriching characterization, dialogue, setting, and tone in a story

  • understand how to elevate a story through thoughtful revision

  • participate in a collaborative and supportive writing environment

Class formatWe will meet on Zoom for this summer workshop. (During non-pandemic times, we usually meet at The Annex on Avenue F).
