One of the themes that have come up during Grand Sessions is how our sense of identity affects the relationships we have with our partners, our parents, our family, our communities. This topic deserves its own session, and we're excited to have the extraordinary Shruti Shah lead a Grand Session on Navigating Cross-Cultural Identity.

Shruti Shah is an Entrepreneur in Residence at Silicon Valley Bank where she is currently working with the early stage practice team on strategic partnerships while also developing a new idea for a new type of funding for startups. She was previously the co-founder and COO of Y Combinator-backed Move Loot, an online full-service marketplace for buying and selling used furniture, where she led national expansion and general business operations.

Shruti grew up as a brown kid with a white mom and Indian dad in the south, and as you can imagine, this wasn’t the easiest experience in the world. To compound that experience, her parents made the choice to send Shruti to an all girls episcopal school where she received a heavy dose of bible study, which was then counteracted with an equally heavy dose of hebrew school. Her mom also worked full time and her dad took take care of Shruti and her sister.

Her own journey in learning to love her uniqueness hasn’t been an easy one. When it comes to identity, she's often felt she wants the privilege of being able to be seen the way she sees herself without the expectations and assumptions that the world is placing on me because of my name and the color of my skin. Being seen the way you see yourself is likely something that most everyone wants, but she thinks this can feel particularly tough for people with mixed race or cross-cultural identities.

More broadly, identity formation, she believes, is a constant process. One that requires a good deal of reflection and sometimes painful confrontation with hard stuff (internalized racism, sexism, religion, negative aspects of a culture). However, it’s left her with a deep sense of gratitude for the way she was raised and subsequently, the many different social and cultural spaces she is able to navigate. Perhaps, that’s the point, that we can find purpose and meaning in the pain and messiness of our identities.

During this session, Shruti will be guiding a conversation on identity formation, and a discussion on how we live our lives as people with cross-cultural identities.
