The five original founding members of Roomful of Blues - pianist Al Copley, guitarist Duke Robillard and saxophonists Rich Lataille, Greg Piccolo and Doug James - are recreating the original dynamic band as 'The Founders'. They are adding a rhythm section of drummer Mark Teixiera and bassist Brad Hallen.
“Al Copley had the idea and he got funding for an album,” Robillard said in the Providence Journal. The band did record the album but a decision hasn’t yet been made on which record label will release it. “We did all old material that we originally wrote around 45 years ago and it came out really great. It pretty much sounds like we did 45 years ago, even though my voice is a little rougher and older.”
Roomful has been going strong since the late 1960s despite numerous lineup changes - but this new band includes three of the original members. Guitarist Robillard, a local legend, has performed with Tom Waits, Muddy Waters, J. Geils of The J. Geils Band, and Bob Dylan.
