 PROFESSIONAL TRAINING

6.0 CEUs for: SWs, RNs, Case Managers, MDs

**This Training provides 2 hours LGBTQ for DC licensed SWs, RNs and MDs and 4 hours of Ethics for DC and MD licensed SWs

Susan Westgate, MBA, MSW, LCSW-C

National Director of Behavioral Health AbsoluteCARE, Instructor

LGBTQI+ individuals face a myriad of social challenges and adversities including higher suicide rates, increased likelihood of mental health concerns, poverty – all resultant from the stress of being one’s true self. LGBTQI+ individuals are more likely to experience healthcare access-related challenges and profound disparities in care. These challenges add to prevailing patterns of individual and structural trauma and are complicated by the culture of healthcare and the dominant medical model that edits out the personal details of the individual receiving care. However, these challenges are ultimately preventable if we as practitioners change our respective lens and advocate on behalf of those we serve. This training is designed to highlight the relevancy and ethics of competent care for LGBTQI+ individuals as well as the ethical need to infuse core social justice concepts into healthcare practice settings.

Attendees will:

  • Recognize how perceptions and value systems impact the care provided to LGBTQI+ patients
  • Determine health structural disparities that impact the provision of care with attention to the SDoH
  • Examine the effects of the lived experience of LGBTQI+ individuals accessing disparate care
  • Identify meaningful strategies based on the ethical principal of social justice for effective engagement with LGBTQI+ individuals and families by blood and by choice
  • Employ empowerment-based language that translates to the provision of affirming care
