This briefing is a widely attended event that conforms to House and Senate ethics rules. Lunch will be provided.

The first of a series of briefings co-organized by the bicameral, bipartisan Congressional Personalized Medicine Caucus in partnership with the Personalized Medicine Coalition (PMC), Technologies Advancing the Future of Personalized Medicine will explore what personalized medicine is and why it matters, with an emphasis on the clinical and economic benefits of earlier disease detection and improved prevention strategies.

PMC defines personalized medicine as an evolving field in which physicians use diagnostic tests to determine which medical treatments will work best for each patient. By combining the data from those tests with an individual's medical history, circumstances, and values, health care providers can develop targeted prevention and treatment plans.

Topics to be explored during a moderated panel discussion and question-and-answer period at the briefing include:

  • What are some new personalized medicine technologies focused on earlier disease prevention, detection, and treatment? Why do they matter?
  • How can technologies, such as liquid biopsies, improve patient care and possibly reduce health care costs?
  • What public policies could accelerate or impede patient access to these advanced diagnostics in the future?
