Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz, State Representative for Illinois’ 17th District, will speak on the topic, Lawmaking Through International Human Rights Framework: Does U.S. Immigration Policy Violate the Refugee Convention and What is the Role of State Policymakers? Rep. Gong-Gershowitz’s presentation will provide a brief introduction to current immigration law and recent changes in Illinois state law. This discussion will focus on the impacts of these changes on vulnerable populations.

Jennifer’s leadership roles in the Immigration and Human Rights Committee and the Judiciary Civil Committee provide a platform to work toward greater equity and opportunity for all residents of Illinois by updating and strengthening human rights protections, crafting and proposing new legislation to improve our immigration system, and establishing a forum in Illinois for addressing human rights and immigration issues.

About Lake Shore Unitarian Society

Lake Shore Unitarian Society is an open-minded community that inspires you to find your own spiritual path. We differentiate ourselves with lay-led Sunday services facilitated by member volunteers, a youth Religious Explorations program based upon Unitarian Universalist (UU) principles, and outstanding musical performances.

We embrace values shared by the world’s major religions and a set of principles that include justice, peace, compassion, and the inherent worth of every human being.

Whether you believe in God or not, or you are not sure, you’ll be welcomed warmly. We come together every Sunday to think about life’s “big questions,” support one another in finding our spiritual paths, and get inspired not just to talk about our values but to live them day to day.

Covid safety: let us all keep each other safe!

While we are meeting in person, we need to mutually trust that we will respect the risks to the most vulnerable and hold each other’s well-being as a shared priority. As such, we will be constantly monitoring public health recommendations. In accordance with Cook County Department of Health and local guidelines, we will be practicing the following safety protocols:

- Socially distant seating
- Masks required and hand sanitizer available
- Individually wrapped food
