Summer Institute 2018—Reaching and Teaching All Learners

The CPE@PHS Summer Institute 2018

Come join us for our second annual Summer Institute, Reaching and Teaching All Learners, as we gather to strengthen and deepen our understanding and use of progressive education strategies and practices for working with diverse student populations. Our classrooms are settings with multifaceted diversity; our students exhibit a wide range of developmental levels, learning differences, ethnicities, cultures, gender identities, and so on. Given such variations, questions we hope to consider include:

• How do teachers/schools make our pedagogy/teaching relevant to our students? Their families? Their local communities?
• What strategies can/do we use to understand, respect, and connect with our students?
• Which classroom practices are best for removing barriers and building on the strengths of individual learners?

This one-day institute will consist of a keynote speech and three 90-minute sessions with workshops on topics relevant to educators dedicated to reaching and teaching all the young people in their classrooms. For each session, participants will be invited to attend one workshop. The workshops will be led by educators well-versed in progressive education philosophy and practice, and are wonderful learning opportunities for educators working with grade levels TK–8.

Breakfast and lunch are included.

Our keynote speaker is Dr. Melina Uncapher, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology at UC San Francisco, and the Director of the Education Program for Neuroscape, a new center that bridges neuroscience and technology. Dr. Uncapher has spent 16 years at the forefront of learning neuroscience, and now applies research to solve real-world problems in education and technology. Her keynote, Your Students’ Minds: Using the Science of Learning to Reach and Teach All Learners, will focus on some common myths of learning and neuromyths, how to reframe those myths using principles from the science of learning, and how to put those principles into practice in your classroom.

We are currently still building our menu of workshops, however some topics that are likely to be explored include:

• Creating a culture of student ownership, joy, and freedom in the mathematics classroom
• Establishing and sustaining student affinity groups
• Examining the variety of authentic student feedback and assessment practices
• Using the lens of immigration to understand and celebrate diverse family backgrounds
• Exploring the philosophical roots of progressive education’s affinity for meeting the needs of a broad range of students
• Harnessing the power of classroom diversity and building literacy skills through poetry
• And much more!
