Strong Space for Relationships: Building a Flourishing Advisory programfor Middle and High Schools

Many schools are wondering how to create and sustain a robust advisory program in their Middle and High schools that continues to thrive for many years. SEL brings a wide and creative lens to view Advisory meeting times. Workshop participants will gain experience in use of meaningful process questions to deepen SEL and the opportunity to populate their Advisory programs with tried and tested, creative and collaborative Advisory activities that help to build an Advisee’s SEL skillset. 
Workshop Goals

Design ideas for Advisory (goals, role of the Advisor, timing and grouping)

A series of experiences that engage meaningful conversations, rituals, personal reflection, and positive group interactions among students

Activities that will deepen and promote inter- and intra-personal development, and explores the importance of a structured, but emerging curriculum for Advisory

Training to facilitate IFSEL’s cornerstone practice and student-favorite, The Open Session

Who should attend?

Welcome & Opening Activity

It's Fundamental (Grades 1-12)

An interactive session providing an introduction to the studies and thinking behind incorporating SEL into educational practices. A framework of guiding principles for instruction, teacher responses, and curricular design will also be shared.

Building a Foundation

Activities to engage students, build trust and create community.

Lunch

Advisory Fundamentals

An exploration of IFSEL’s 8 Principles for a Thriving Advisory Program, including examples from schools and suggested practices.

Focusing and Grounding Experience

Advisory Activities Deep Dive

In this session we'll share a range of SEL activities for Advisory, including activities for morning meetings and longer advisory sessions. We will also focus on the practice of inter- and intra-personal questioning, and the IFSEL Teacher Toolbox.

Lunch

Open Session Facilitator Training

The Open Session is a cornerstone practice for effective Middle and High School SEL classes and Advisory programs. This session will provide all the details you need to effectively facilitate powerful, “collective wondering” and teach sensitive student responses such as clarification and encouragement.

Our two-day workshop will be hosted by Miami Country Day School in Miami, Florida, USA. The campus can be reached via public transportation and car or app based rides.

Cancellation & Refund Policy
One of IFSEL’s core values is to support schools and educators seeking professional development.  We understand that plans may change, and respectfully request that if you cannot attend a workshop, please try to find a substitute from your school to take your place.
If you inform us of your need to cancel up to 4 weeks before the workshop date, we will return your fee, minus a $50-per-workshop, per-person processing fee. Cancellation with less than 4 weeks notice is non-refundable, but can be transferred to another person.
IFSEL reserves the right to cancel any program at any time. In that circumstance, a full refund will be made. To begin the cancellation process, please email us at admin@instituteforsel.net.
Confirmation
We will email you a confirmation upon receipt of full payment. Please note that your participation will not be confirmed until we receive your full payment, either by credit card or by check.
