The second in a series that celebrates St. Louis’ multicultural communities, this exhibit features rare and beautiful African instruments drawn from The Sheldon’s Hartenberger World Music Collection. The product of a long aesthetic evolution, the rich tradition of African music is grounded in the function of preserving and passing on cultural histories. This exhibit will feature instruments from West Africa, Middle, South and Southeast Africa, and in January, instruments representing the Islamic faith.
Gallery Talk: Tuesday, November 12 at 6 p.m.
Exhibit curator Dr. Aurelia Hartenberger and Dr. Jackie Lewis Harris, Director of the Connecting Human Origin and Cultural Diversity program at University of Missouri-St. Louis. Admission free, reservations suggested but not required. Contact Paula Lincoln at plincoln@thesheldon.org or 314-533-9900 x37.
