Join us as we play to learn!

Our PLAYshops engage participants in embracing their own creativity, imagination, and exploration. We take an integrated, interdisciplinary approach to STEAM learning and explore ways to blur traditional disciplinary boundaries. As a result, our PLAYshops are designed for disciplinary boundary-crossing to generate authentic new forms of knowing and doing.

Our PLAYshops are designed around five key commitments:

  • All learning is embodied. Learners draw on bodily resources as they develop conceptual understanding grounded in physical environments.
  • Integrated STEAM experiences are critical for today’s learners. These give students opportunities for interdisciplinary problem-solving.
  • Play is a vehicle for learning. Play supports imagination, creativity, and productive cycles of failure and engagement.
  • Narratives and storytelling throughout play support meaning-making and language development.
  • Mathematics and science are culturally-embedded practices. Learning opportunities should be culturally-relevant and inclusive of multimodal ways of knowing and doing.

SPRING 2020 PLAYSHOPS

PAPER IMAGINEERING

Explore the wonder of paper folding and construction through this interactive experience. Participants will create various paper projects that allow for the exploration and integration of STEAM-based content.

March 18 - The World We Shape

We will explore the wonders of paper art through the lens of cultural heritage and the power of integrating mathematics and art. Participants will engage in projects focused on symmetry and paper weaving in both 2D and 3D space.

April 15 - Transforming Dimensions

We will explore the wonders of paper art through embodied interactions and the engineering of movable paper models. Participants will engage in projects focused on the transformation of 2D shapes to 3D solids.

May 13 - Patterns and Nature’s Designs

We will explore the wonders of paper art through the beauty of patterns. Participants will engage in projects that focus on recreating patterns from nature and on the intentional use of patterns in art and real-world applications.
