Photographers often work with individual images, refining their technique, composition and content. The next step in that development is to work with a group of related images and build a personal project from start to finish. The class takes you through a process of brainstorming, development, editing and presentation to transform your ideas to a completed form. We will also create artist statements, and strategies for getting your work out into the world. Each student’s development will be individual in the course, but expect to make considerable progress on your project over the five weeks. Each week we will review your work, and make recommendations for improvement, and next steps for your series. Whether this is the first time you are creating a personal project, or you are stuck in your process and would like some feedback to help refine and complete an existing series, this class is for you.

Victoria Mara Heilweil is a nationally exhibited photographic artist, curator, and educator. Her photography transforms the mundane into the sublime. She received her MFA from California College of the Arts in 1995. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the San Jose Institute for Contemporary Art, Intersection for the Arts, Southern Exposure, RayKo Photo Center, Pro Arts and PHOTO Gallery in the Bay Area; wall space gallery and Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum in Southern California; University Art Gallery at California State University, Chico; Minneapolis Photo Center; Visual Arts Center in Portsmouth, Virginia; and Washington Square Art Galleries in New York City. She has also created public and community-based artworks in conjunction with the ZERO1 Biennial in San Jose and the Bayview Opera House in San Francisco. Heilweil was selected as an Artist in Residence at the de Young Museum in 2015.

What are my transport/parking options getting to San Francisco Art Institute?
All classes, unless otherwise noted, meet at 800 Chestnut Street, between Jones and Leavenworth. You can find directions to campus
SFAI is located in a residential neighborhood, and free two-hour parking is available on all of the streets immediately surrounding the school. The two-hour restriction cuts off at 9 pm, so evening Public Education students do not need to move their car, unless you arrive prior to 7 pm.
SFAI is easily accessible via public transportation, with Muni bus lines #30 Stockton, #45 Union, and #47 Van Ness located within a few blocks of campus.

For courses that meet for ten sessions or more, a 100% refund minus a $20 processing fee is given if written notice is received at least five business days before the first class. After five business days before the first class, an 80% refund minus a $20 processing fee is given when written notice is received prior to the third class. No refund is given after the class has met three times. Please allow two to three weeks to receive your refund.
For courses that meet for six sessions or fewer, a 100% refund minus a $20 processing fee is given when written notice is received at least five business days before the first class.
