5-Week Treatment Group
Social anxiety can interfere with the major activities of life. Learn cognitive behavioral and improvisational skills in a supportive group setting. Experience recovery with others who have "an exquisite sensitivity to scrutiny from others." In addition, staff can meet individually in office or community settings to help you build confidence and face fear, one step at a time. Using a cognitive behavioral framework members learn and practice breaking the cycle of anxiety and avoidance.
Staff incorporate other stategies including, role play, story telling, movement and improvisation activities in pared and group exercises. All activities are voluntary and designed to provide a safe place to face experiences difficult to practice in real life. We incorporate and encourage members to embrace "play" as it is the oldest form of learning. Each class will include a mini lecture on Cognitive Behavioral Strategies.
The workbook is "Managing Social Anxiety" by Debra Hope. Behavioral homework and on-line sharing with group members are part of the adventure. A weekly on-line, peer support group will be an option vailable for members. The expectation is that in addition to in-person and on-line contact, members will schedule practice "exposures" getting out of their comfort zones and into applying new skills and attitudes to real life.
Working with a therapist during and after the program is recommended.
