Join Slow Food East Bay for the next in our series celebrating diverse culinary traditions!

In the dark days of January, we travel to Senegal with chef Nafy Flatley of Teranga, who will share her story and discuss what it's like to be an immigrant - and a mother. As a parent of an 'American' child, how do you balance history & present? How do you raise your children to enjoy & engage in their new communities but still honor the country from which they've come? What do you do when they want pizza and not mafe for dinner?!?! Speaking of, get ready for a wonderful tasty mafe on our own plates that evening!

Our partner organization for the evening is Street Level Health Project, an Oakland-based grassroots organization whose mission is to improve the health and well-being of underserved urban immigrant communities in the Bay Area. They work with Alameda County residents who were, or, are, homeless, previously homeless, re-entry, immigrant, and non-immigrant families; providing a full wrap-around center that provides an array of services from healthcare, to food access, steady employment and job safety training, and legal and health social services referrals.

Slow Food East Bay’s series of events celebrates the cultural food traditions of immigrants, refugees and displaced people, learning how food helps people stay connected to homeland and also engage with new communities. Attendees will be inspired by stories from chefs and community organizations, learning how diversity and migration have helped in the development of our food system.... And, frankly, make it delicious!

Speaking of delicious, our menu for the evening is in the works.  *If you have any dietary restrictions, please let us know when you purchase your ticket and/or email us with details so we can plan accordingly. No changes can be made the night of*
