Sandplay Therapists of America (STA) 2020 National Conference is organized by Sandplay Therapists of America (STA) and will be held from Jun 04 - 07, 2020 at Crowne Plaza Redondo Beach And Marina, Redondo Beach, California, United States of America.

Conference Description:
Sandplay Therapy is a non-verbal, expressive therapeutic method developed by Dora M. Kalff, drawing upon the works of Swiss psychiatrist C.G. Jung and the pioneering English pediatrician and play therapist Margaret Lowenfeld. At this national conference, we will explore the numinous and its healing qualities in the Sandplay process.

Both Jung and Lowenfeld focused on the healing aspects of play. We know that Jung created structures on the shore of Lake Zurich as a way of working out inner conflict. In London, Margaret Lowenfeld observed the change that occurred in traumatized children as they played and told their stories. Jung’s life work centered on images of transformation in which “the psyche tells its own story.” Kalff incorporated these ideas in developing her approach, focused on the “free and protected space” within the therapeutic relationship, enriched by her personal connection with Tibetan and Zen Buddhism. 

Conference Objectives:
• Describe how Kalffian Sandplay promotes psychological healing and growth that takes into account the numinous aspect of sandplay work.
• Identify three clinical and play therapy skills demonstrated in case presentations.
• Identify three practices which may support the numinous aspect of the clinical work of Sandplay and Play Therapy.
• Identify three contributions from contemporary neuroscience and research in Sandplay and/or Play Therapy relevant to the treatment of somatic and emotional disturbances.
• Analyze the numinous experience in Sandplay Therapy as it might relate to the developmental and trauma history of the individual patient/client.
• Name three characteristics of what might be considered a numen and what these may bring to healing.
