Come celebrate the release of Brad Gooch's new book Rumi's Secret: The Life of the Sufi Poet of Love. In this biography, Gooch brilliantly illustrates the life of an artist born over eight centuries ago, whose memory has been considered the stuff of legend.

Gooch will be joined in conversation by Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, with music by Amir Alan Vahab and ensemble, and Sufi dance by Rana Gorgani and dancers.

This event is presented in partnership with Alwan for the Arts, Cordoba House, Auburn Theological Seminary, the Interfaith Center of New York, and the New York Open Center.

A contribution of $10 is suggested, and we ask that you please RSVP at bit.ly/2j4OUrE.

Friday's NYT review about how Rumi's Secret helps create nuance in popular culture's view of Islam feels like required reading this morning. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/20/books/review/rumi-brad-gooch.html?smprod=nytcore-iphone&smid=nytcore-iphone-share&_r=0

As this event gets closer, we recommend reading this thought-provoking article from the New Yorker, with quotes from Brad Gooch, which details how Rumi's Islamic heritage, influences, and references are often removed from translations of his work. Why did this happen? And what are the implications to modern day, English readings of Rumi? http://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/the-erasure-of-islam-from-the-poetry-of-rumi
