Often unhealthy self-esteem is the underlying cause of the following issues:
Fear * Anxiety * Anger * Panic attacks
Dependence * Lack of assertiveness
Depression * Eating disorders
Addictive behaviors * Relationship problems
Social anxiety disorders
(From Research conducted by Prof. Lissette Saavedra)
Therefore, helping youth create healthy self-esteem is a very effective strategy to prevent many emotional, behavioral, and relational issues in the future.
Teens who have healthy self-esteem appreciate themselves more, have meaningful friendships and deeper relationships with their parents. They also get better grades in school. They set higher goals for themselves, they are more future-oriented and achieve more in life.
