National Sawdust invites you to a special holiday film screening of selections from A Christmas Past, a collection of early short films produced at Thomas Edison’s studio in the early 1900s, with a live score performed by electronic artist Ricardo Romaneiro and friends. Offering a nostalgic peek into the Yuletide pleasures of the turn of the century, these picturesque comedies and tender dramas were produced as cinematic Christmas cards offered to moviegoers of the silent era. This evening features two short films from this collection of archival rarities, digitally remastered from the original 35mm: the 1910 version of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, which was the first film to feature double exposure, and the 1905 film The Night Before Christmas, the first cinematic adaptation of Clement Clarke Moore’s poem ’Twas the Night Before Christmas. In between the films, Romaneiro and friends perform reimagined versions of traditional Christmas hymns, accompanied by oil-based visual projections by Liquid Light Lab.
