West Adams Heritage Association (WAHA) invites you to a Special Tour Event -- "Before and After: Restoration Tales II Jefferson Park."

TOUR POSTPONED TO:

Saturday, July 18

10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Check in at 2170 West 29th Place in Jefferson Park

Over the past few decades, many period homes in the Historic West Adams District have been lovingly restored by their owners. But how did they do it?

Find out at West Adams Heritage Associations second outing of "Before and After: Restoration Tales II," when four historic homes in Jefferson Park open their doors and we share stories of their restorations, and show you some DIY restoration techniques.

Each of the featured historic homes had great bones, but needed someone to love and restore them. See Before photos of the restoration projects, which are all in the Jefferson Park HPOZ (Historic Preservation Overlay Zone).

Wreck to Wonderful: One of the featured houses has been brought back to beautiful life from near-ruin. It was stuccoed over, and converted to a duplex without permits. Most of the interior doors were missing, leaking pipes led to floors and walls rotting away, and every window had been changed to aluminum. See how the owners made the place sparkle again!

Oldest home in the neighborhood: Visitors will also tour the landmark Joseph Lee Starr Dairy Farmhouse, an 1887 Victorian residence that had been abandoned and was in nuisance abatement, with a partially-gutted interior, when the present owner purchased the house. Now lovingly restored, it has won several Historic Preservation Awards. Learn how the owner and his team discovered the original, hidden away column details, the original hardware and the earliest colors and they learned that the kitchen was originally a stable elsewhere on the farm.

There will also be some demonstrations of DIY restoration techniques. Learn how to strip paint from vintage hardware, repair windows and other common restoration practices.

This is a self-guided walking tour with just a few blocks of walking.

Advance tickets are $25, sold via Eventbrite only. Additional tickets will be available on the day of the event for $35 (CASH or check only) at Check-In, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Doors close at the Tour Houses at 3 p.m.

WAHA's tours, including "Before and After," are usually held "rain or shine" but we do realize that the uncertainty surrounding Coronavirus makes this event a little different. At this moment in time, we are planning to hold the tour, since it will give attendees invaluable education about restoration techniques. Nonetheless, if you are unable to attend after purchasing tickets, please consider your purchase a donation to West Adams Heritage Association. And THANK YOU for your contunied support of WAHA's preservation advocacy efforts throughout the Historic West Adams District.***

**** If you have already purchased tickets for the original, March 21, date, we have emailed you with the alert regarding the postponement of this event until July 18th due to increasing concerns over the Coronaviris COVID-19. To respect the health and safety of our host homeowners, their families, our volunteers and you, our tour guests, WAHA has rescheduled the Before and After: Restoration Tales II tour in Jefferson Park, with this new anticipated date of Saturday, July 18, 2020. We will certainly keep everyone informed if even that date changes.

This event supports WAHA's mission to encourage and promote preservation of the communitys architectural heritage, to further appreciation of cultural heritage, to educate in restoration techniques, and to support beautification efforts. Funds raised will go to WAHA's Preservation Defense Fund for preservation advocacy activities.
