Reinhardt Contemporary Arts Festival
The first annual Reinhardt Contemporary Arts Festival is a day-long event that highlights the talents of Reinhardt University's Music, Film, Theatre and Art departments.
Admission is FREE!
"Koyaanisqatsi" is a 1982 American experimental film directed by Godfrey Reggio with music composed by Philip Glass and cinematography by Ron Fricke. The film consists primarily of slow motion and time-lapse footage of cities and many natural landscapes across the United States. The visual tone poem contains neither dialogue nor a vocalized narration: its tone is set by the juxtaposition of images and music.
"The Zoo Story" is a one-act play by American playwright Edward Albee. His first play, it was written in 1958 and completed in just three weeks. The play explores themes of isolation, loneliness, miscommunication as anathematization, social disparity and dehumanization in a commercial world.
We continue with a "Minimalism in Music" lecture by Dutch composer Douwe Eisenga. Eisenga's work has roots in pop music of his generation. He makes no difference between pop songs, twelve-tone techniques, baroque music or eastern musical patterns and manages to combine these elements in his compositions.
William Susman will present a lecture on film music composing, using his work with the award-winning film "Native New Yorker."
Susman's music is notable for his integration of a variety of influences, including the Western classical tradition, Afro-Cuban music, free jazz, and several non-Western folk traditions. His music uses an array of musical devices from medieval isorhtyhm and hocket to the Afro-Cuban clavé and montuño.
An Art Exhibit will be on display all day.
The festival concludes with a 7:30pm Concert performed by the School of Performing Arts Music Faculty and Guest Artists. Featured composers include: Douwe Eisenga, Philip Glass, Brian Kozaczek, Marc Mellits, Steve Reich and William Susman.
