Pulitzer Prize Author Talk: Viet Thanh Nguyen
We the People and Phillips Exeter Academy presents:
“An Evening with Viet Thanh Nguyen”
Tuesday, January 22, 7PM
at Phillips Exeter Academy Assembly Hall
Exeter, NH: We the People of Exeter Lecture and Film Series and Phillips Exeter Academy will host a talk by Pulitzer Prize winning author Viet Thanh Nguyen on Tuesday, January 22, at 7 PM in the PEA Assembly Hall.
Nguyen’s debut novel, The Sympathizer depicts his narrator’s dramatic escape in the final days of the war and subsequent resettlement in the United States. The Pulitzer Prize Committee said of this New York Times best-selling novel: “The Sympathizer explores a life between two worlds and examines the legacy of the Vietnam War in literature, film, and the wars we fight today.”
Viet Thanh Nguyen also wrote Nothing Ever Dies: Vietnam and the Memory of War, a nonfiction finalist for the National Book Award, and The Refugees. His work articulates the Vietnamese experience, the Asian- American experience, and the refugee experience. He explores questions of immigration, identity, family, and memory. Most recently, Nguyen called on 17 fellow refugee writ-ers from across the globe to shed light on their experiences, and published them in The Displaced, a powerful dispatch from the individual lives behind current headlines.
Viet Thanh Nguyen is a critic-at-large for the Los Angeles Times, a contributing editor for the New York Times, and an associate professor of English and American Studies and Ethnicity at USC.
Viet Thanh Nguyen’s talk is presented by We the People, a free lecture and film series exploring issues at the intersection of current events, ethics and religion.
We the People is co-sponsored by the Congregational, Episcopal, and Unitari-an Universalist churches of Exeter, in association with Phillips Exeter Acade-my and Water Street Bookstore. The talk will be held at the Phillips Exeter Academy Assembly Hall, which is handicapped-accessible. On-site parking is available.
