Course Description

Course Description: This class will provide key elements of the psychological first aid to assist individuals in the immediate aftermath of a disaster and terrorism to foster short and long term adaptive functioning.

• What is psychological first aid?
• Who provides PFA and who is the target audience?
• Where should PFA be used?
• Strengths of PFA
• Guidelines for delivering PFA
• Behaviors to avoid in delivering PFA
• Working with special populations (children, older adults, survivors with disabilities, cultural and ethnic considerations, etc.)
• Preparing to deliver PFA and provider self-care
• The 8 core actions of PFA
• Contact and engagement
• Safety and comfort
• Stabilization
• Information gathering
• Practical assistance
• Connection with social supports
• Information on coping
• Linking with collaborative services

This free, one day course, is sponsored by the Washington County Medical Reserve Corps and the Oregon Health Authority's Health Security Preparedness and Response program. It is facilitated by instructors with Bolante.NET.

Meals and refreshments will not be provided. Please be prepared to bring lunch with you or purchase at one of the nearby eateries.

Course enrollment includes training materials, Field Operations Guide, and Psychological First Aid Certification.
