Overview:
During steady state or heightened awareness, it is critical that security personnel are aware of risks and vulnerabilities and that appropriate protective measures are put into place to protect a facility or venue. The Protective Measures Course (PMC), offered by the Office for Bombing Prevention (OBP) within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), National Protection and Programs Directorate’s Office of Infrastructure Protection, provides participants with a basic understanding of how to identify risks and vulnerabilities to a facility, determine additional security needs for a special event or public gathering, and identify and apply physical and procedural protective measures to mitigate the threat of an improvised explosive device (IED) or vehicle-borne IED. The PMC is is designed for public and private sector security personnel at the executive, management, and operations level. Public safety workers, emergency managers, law enforcement, and special event security personnel can also benefit from the course.
Course Format and Requirements
The PMC is a one day, instructor-led course designed for small group instruction of 25 participants. The International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) authorizes 0.8 continuing education units awarded through partnership with FEMA’s Center for Domestic Preparedness. A classroom large enough to accommodate the registered participants with three easels for group activities is required. The following modules are provided during the course of instruction:
