Proposal Analysis in Grantmaking explores what informs foundation strategy and grantmaking and also focuses on the essential skills of grantmaking, including proposal review, due diligence, recommendations, and other core program officer competency areas.
This two-day course provides you with an understanding of how proposal analysis contributes to your foundation’s broader strategy along with the necessary tools and methods to conduct a thorough proposal review and grantmaking process.

Jason Franklin, Ph.D.
is the Johnson Center’s W.K. Kellogg Community Philanthropy Chair. As holder of the nation’s first endowed chair focused on community philanthropy, he engages in research, teaching, service, and thought leadership to explore and advance the field, nationally and internationally. Appointed in 2015, Dr. Franklin brings a background in grantmaking and donor education, nonprofit strategy and leadership, social entrepreneurship, and community organizing and advocacy. He is a leading voice in the field on issues of collective giving, social justice philanthropy, and broader trends in charity and social change and a regular commentator in the media on these topics in publications ranging from the
New York Times, ABC News,
and
Wall Street Journal
to the
Chronicle of Philanthropy, NonProfit Times, Alliance Magazine
and more.

Mary Galeti
is a Principal at
Shiplake Partners
, a consulting firm that helps institutions create and nurture relationships that offer upside and mitigate risk with the communities that exist both internally and externally. They work with clients to determine what non-institutional relationships their strategy requires. Then, they work with the senior executive team and staff to forge those relationships, sustainably and authentically.
Galeti also serves as the Vice-Chair of the Tecovas Foundation. The Tecovas Foundation funds social innovation and entrepreneurship by focusing on leveraging new service models and sustainable economic development both locally and internationally. A member of the board of trustees since 2000, Galeti has led Tecovas to develop a concrete vision to increase the foundation’s capacity and effectiveness. Recently the foundation has added impact investing and PRI work to their portfolio.
Galetti serves as the Chair of the Family Philanthropy Committee at the Council on Foundations. She also serves as the Vice-Chair of the StartingBloc Social Innovation Fellowship Program and on the board of Directors of the Global Shapers, an initiative of the World Economic Forum.
She has spoken on the issues of generational transition and leadership cultivation in philanthropy and the nonprofit space at many venues, including the Council on Foundations, Advisors in Philanthropy, and The Youth Summit on Social Innovation and Philanthropy at the United Nations. She has also been a frequent contributor to WNYC’s The Takeaway on supporting military families during deployment.
