About Dick Martin:

Dick Martin led public relations for AT&T during one of the most tumultuous periods in its history, when the company was reeling from competition in its core market, trying to break into the much faster growing markets of wireless and broadband communications, and coping with the impact of a major competitor that had cooked its books, putting industry revenue into a tailspin. Plus, its Board totally botched its responsibility of finding a qualified successor for the company CEO.

Martin documented those years in his book Tough Calls: AT&T and Hard Lessons Learned in the Telecom Wars, which one reviewer said, “might be the most honest insider’s account of high-pressure public relations ever committed to paper.” Martin has written four more books since then. But as he reflected on his career, he concluded that strong communications skills may be the ticket to entry for a public relations career. But as you progress in your career, clients depend on you less for what to say, than what to do. Public relations is really the application of ethics.

That’s the subject of his latest book, written with Donald K. Wright, Harold Burson professor of public relations at Boston University. Public Relations Ethics: How to Practice PR Without Losing Your Soul is a practical guide to developing a framework for ethical decision-making.

Since retiring from AT&T in 2003, Martin has been conducting highly popular workshops on ethical decision-making for such organizations as Corporate Communications International, Rutgers University, Syracuse University, the Public Relations Leaders Forum, Georgetown University, and others.
