Exploring spices from the women who grow them to the women who cook with them.
Single origin. Direct trade. Heirloom. Hand picked. For many of us, these are words used to describe so much of our food...with the exception of our spice pantry. We care about the terroir of our wine, and the people who planted and picked our farm-fresh veggies. But where does our turmeric come from? Who harvests our saffron? How can we use nature’s bounty to create transcendent dishes? As we incorporate increasingly diverse cuisines into our kitchens, how can we acknowledge and appreciate the origins and future of our spices in our kitchens, farms, restaurants, and grocery aisles?
Sana Javeri Kadri- the founder of Diaspora Co.- has a mission to put power and resources into indigenous spice farming and create a radically new and equitable vision of the spice trade is everything we #pinefor. And she isn’t alone. Carol Wang, the co-founder of Rumi Spice sources sustainably-farmed saffron directly from Afghan farmers, employing more than 1,900 Afghan women- a practice far from the norm in the spice industry. And Chef Preeti Mistry’s use of spice is a cornerstone of her expression of style & identity through food, from her Top Chef experience, to opening her restaurant, and writing her gem of a cookbook.
Join pineapple SF for a convo on the power, beauty and style of our spice cabinets ft. Sana Javeri Kadri, Carol Wang, and Preeti Mistry- 3 women with different philosophies on transforming the way we think about spice. Our moderator Hetal Vasavada, former MasterChef contestant and founder of milkandcardamom.com, will lead us in exploring what it’s like to start a company rooted in sustainable agriculture, and create a career around celebrating the origin of spice, and Preeti will lead a conversation about power, politics, and sovereignty around spices, followed by an exclusive spice blend demo. We'll end the night with more mingling, eating and a spice bazaar.
The event will take place at Baana, a creative studio and inspiring setting for exploring social and community engagement and conversations around art, design and food located near Nob Hill. Delicious food from KASA Indian Eatery will be provided by Caviar and we’ll wash it down with bubbly, probiotic Health-Ade Kombucha.
