"Father Engagement” makes a commitment to a partnership that is rooted in positive relationships. With involvement, there is an emphasis on being present. With engagement, there is a focus on creating and sustaining ongoing relationships. The intent is to support families and to benefit children’s learning and development.

Details about MAN CAVE 2020-Helping Boys Thrive Summit:

This one-day summit will begin with keynote speaker Dr. Michael Gurian, of "The Gurian Institute." Dr. Gurian is a renowned educator, marriage and family counselor, and New York Times bestselling author. Dr. Gurian’s books include some of the following titles but are not limited to: "THE WONDER OF BOYS, THE WONDER OF GIRLS, BOYS AND GIRLS LEARN DIFFERENTLY!, and LEADERSHIP AND THE SEXES." As a social philosopher, Dr. Gurian has pioneered efforts to bring neuro-biology and brain research into homes, schools, corporations, and public policy. Dr. Gurian will guide attendees down the path of strengthening their efforts to be engaged, committed, and responsible individuals in the lives of young children and adolescents.

Lunch time Keynote Guest Speaker and Break-out Session Presenter:

Dr. Glynetta DeShon Fletcher, Assistant Principal of Edwin Markham Middle School in Los Angeles Unified School District, has devoted her life to working in urban public schools with at-risk students. She has taught English Language Arts at the high school level, study skills for incoming college freshmen, and ELA secondary methods for urban educators. As a teacher in an urban high school, she focused on African American males as they prepared to transition to their college and careers. Dr. Fletcher will share with participants about Trauma and Learning: Gender-Specific, Trauma-Informed Strategies for Helping Children Learn and Grow. She will discuss the impact of trauma and how traumatic situations keep the brain, in fight and flight mode, causing children to struggle. Participants will learn practical strategies for building strong relationships and attachments with traumatized children.

Workshop Presenters:

Eva Dwight is a Gurian Institute Master Trainer, a Certified Positive Discipline Trainer, and an Associate Certified Coach. After teaching English Language Arts for 12 years, Eva earned her Master’s Degree in Educational Counseling and worked for 20 years as a junior high counselor in Mesa, AZ. She currently provides training and professional development in schools and school districts regarding how boys and girls learn, as well as effective classroom management.

Sean Ross is the Deputy Associate Superintendent of Academic Standards for the Arizona Department of Education. Sean leads the team that oversees standards and professional development for English language arts, math, science, social studies, and world & native languages. Prior to joining ADE, Sean was a classroom teacher, teacher mentor, and instructional coach for 15 years.

In addition to these keynote presentations attendees will also learn strategies to enhance their education, work, and family outcomes through other workshops and MAN TALK Presentations!

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Parents, Grandparents, Educators, Foster Care Providers, Pastors, Youth Leaders, Sunday School Teachers, Therapists, Non-Profit Organizations, and anyone who works with or who is engaged in raising boys are highly encouraged to attend this one day event!
