Whether preparing a grant recommendation for the board, developing a strategy document to share with stakeholders, or drafting blog posts, writing persuasively is an essential component of a grantmaker’s role.
This day-and-a-half, interactive, group coaching workshop focuses on sharpening the analytical skills that are the basis for good writing and can be tailored to different audiences and written grantmaking products.
As a member of this workshop cohort, you will be able to bring your own writing samples and put new skills into practice with the Johnson Center’s grantmaking experts, with additional time to focus on your foundation’s unique requirements.
What you’ll learn in this course:
How to strengthen your analytical skills to inform your writing
How to tailor your written work for use in different products
How to write persuasively for different internal and external audiences

Teri Behrens, Ph.D.
is the executive director of the Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy at Grand Valley State University. Previously, Dr. Behrens served as director of the Institute for Foundation and Donor Learning, providing professional development resources for donors, foundation staff and those who work with them to implement programs. Dr. Behrens is also the editor in chief for

, the first peer-reviewed journal of philanthropy.

Steve Wilson retired from the Frey Foundation in 2018, where he had been president since 2012. Before joining the foundation, Wilson spent nearly four years as executive director of the Ruth Mott Foundation in his hometown of Flint. Prior to that, he led the Grand Rapids convention and visitors bureau, now called Experience Grand Rapids, from 1992 to 2008.
