We invite school-aged children in grades K-5, particularly those struggling to read, to the shelter to read to our shelter animals during our semi-monthly Paws to Read program! Studies have shown that reading to animals helps with literacy as children are more confident and less conscientious reading to animals. And, by reading to our shelter residents, children help socialize them, making them more adoptable. During this one hour grant-funded program, children will be introduced to our shelter and learn how animals arrive at the shelter and what they can do to promote animal welfare. They will then spend time reading to an animal from a favorite book they may want bring to the shelter, or a borrowed book from our shelter library.
