Patterns and Trends in the Online Victimization of Children

The ChicagoCAC will be offering to its partners and staff webinars of trainings offered by experts and specialists within the field of child protection, investigation and forensic interviewing.  Those trainings will be offered on site at the ChicagoCAC and are free of charge to ChicagoCAC staff and affliated partner staff.  These trainings are not open to individuals who are not connected to the ChicagoCAC or invited to attend below mentioned events.  These trainings are offered at lunch time so participants are encouraged to bring their lunch and any other refreshments they desire.

Patterns and Trends in the Online Victimization of Children

This session demonstrates recent patterns and trends of online victimization mined from NCMEC data as well as intriguing law enforcement investigations. Topics include the vulnerabilities of children using online gaming, cellular devices and virtual communities. In addition, this session explores the difficult issue of "self-exploitation" that is increasing in prevalence across the country.

Presenter: Kathleen Harris

Kathleen Harris is a CyberTipline Supervisor in the Exploited Children Division (ECD) at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). In this capacity, she is responsible for managing a staff of approximately 25 analysts and support personnel. Ms. Harris has handled over 22,000 Cybertipline reports, resulting in numerous arrests of child sexual offenders. She has participated in various law enforcement investigative training programs on high technology crimes, online child exploitation, and investigative and analytical skill development. She has provided extensive technical assistance to law enforcement in the United States, as well as abroad, on cases of child sexual exploitation, especially Internet crimes against children.

Ms. Harris has been with NCMEC since June 2000. She began her NCMEC career in the Call Center, where she provided assistance to parents, social services, and law enforcement on missing and exploited children cases. Prior to joining NCMEC, Ms. Harris served as a Crisis Hotline Specialist. Ms. Harris holds a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Ohio Wesleyan University.

NCMEC's Exploited Children Division was established in 1996 by a mandate by the U.S. Congress and serves as a resource center for the public, parents, and law enforcement on the issue of the sexual exploitation of children. ECD works collaboratively with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Postal Service, U.S. Department of Justice, and the U.S. Customs Service (now the Department of Homeland Security). ECD analysts process reports received on child sexual exploitation through the CyberTipline and disseminate the leads to Federal, state, local, and international law enforcement agencies for further investigation. ECD analysts also provide technical assistance to those law enforcement agencies investigating cases of child sexual exploitation.
