U.S. Forest Service - Coconino National Forest
1824 S. Thompson St., Flagstaff, 86001, AZ, United States
Landscapes ranging from the magical red rocks of Sedona to the grandeur of the Mogollon Rim to the heights of Arizona's San Francisco Peaks. The Coconino National Forest covers over 1.8 million acres of forest in north-central Arizona. The Forest ranges from approximately 15 miles north of the San Francisco Peaks to its wandering southern boundary along the Verde River, Fossil Creek, and Mogollon Rim. It ranges from the east starting several miles beyond Walnut Canyon National Monument, to the western border marked by Kendrick Mountain, Sycamore Creek, and the Verde River. The pine-covered plateau above the Mogollon Rim, the 2,000' cliff edge of the Colorado Plateau, is cut by deep canyons such as Oak Creek Canyon and Sycamore Canyon. World-famous The red rock country surrounding Sedona is the spectacular result of geologic processes carving magnificent rock formations at the Mogollon Rim's edge. The Forest is also home to Arizona's highest peaks, an extinct stratovolcano rising high above the tree line to top 12,633 feet. The high elevations above the Mogollon Rim give Arizona a real winter with enough snow to support downhill and cross-country skiing facilities on the Forest. Cities and towns within or bordering include Flagstaff, Sedona, Payson, Strawberry, Pine, Happy Jack, Clints Well, Kachina Village, Mountainaire, Munds Park, Village of Oak Creek, Camp Verde, Cottonwood, and Clarkdale. The Coconino National Forest is one of six National Forests in Arizona. It is bordered to the west by Kaibab National Forest, to the southwest by Prescott National Forest, to the south by Tonto National Forest, and to the east by Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest.
