Trikes & trails: an innovative wheelchair biking program for severely disabled and debilitated elders, children, war veterans and more. WHO CAN RIDE? Ideal candidates are people who are able to transfer themselves from one wheelchair to another, and who have enough upper body strength and movement for self-mobility in a wheelchair. However, people who can also participate include: those requiring assistance to transfer (e.g., a Hoyer lift); those with urinary drainage devices, portable oxygen, and/or tube feedings; and those with dementia. Participants with any of these or other special needs may only ride as determined by their professional caregivers. Passengers unable to transfer themselves into the Duet™ wheelchair will be transferred by nursing staff. People who cannot participate are: those who have postural or other conditions (such as a decubitus ulcer) that prohibit them from sitting upright; those with extreme, unpredictable behaviors; and those with acute illnesses. WHEN ARE RIDES AVAILABLE? Weekdays from 9-4, are reserved for residents of local institutional facilities (e.g., nursing homes, vet centers, and the like). Weekend slots, if a trained volunteer pedaler is available and willing to ride then, may be used by other disabled or debilitated members of the community who live at home. COMMUNITY RIDE TIMES Community ride times are on Saturday and Sunday from 9:30-11:30am and 1:30-3:30pm. Family members are welcome and encouraged to join along on their own bicycles. All community rides originate at Seaside Rehabilitation and Healthcare Community, 850 Baxter Boulevard, Portland. WHERE DO WE RIDE FROM AND TO? Currently, all rides originate from Seaside Rehabilitation and Healthcare Community at 850 Baxter Boulevard, Portland. Our regular routes include these Portland Trails: Back Cove, Bayside, Eastern Prom, and Harbor. As the program grows, we anticipate using more of the trail system. CAN FAMILY MEMBERS JOIN IN? Yes, absolutely! Family and friends are welcome and encouraged to join along on their own bicycles. If you don’t have your own, bikes are available for rent through CycleMania (774-2933; 59 Federal St., Portland). PREPARATION Before signing up for a ride, qualified participants must: 1. Undergo a health assessment, receive written approval and referral from their family physician. 2. Download, sign and submit a Portland Wheelers Waiver Agreement (available on our website). All signed waivers must be submitted directly to the volunteer pedaler at the time of the ride. Waivers will be on-hand at Seaside Rehabilitation and Healthcare Community, however, minors and those with legal guardians should have gathered all necessary signatures prior to their arrival.
