Please note:

This course is available only to those who have already taken the Classroom Educator course with instructor Dawn Nieman or another AOGPE Fellow (prior approval required; contact the TRC Director at liu.trc@gmail.com for more info). A Bachelor's degree is also required for Associate Level training. Looking for the Classroom Educator course?  Click here.

This Associate Level course is designed for teachers specifically interested in teaching students with Dyslexia or a Language-Based Learning Disability.  Teachers will learn to work in a 1:1 setting using diagnostic and prescriptive strategies to allow for maximum student growth.  The course includes all topics from the Classroom Educator level as well as:

  • learning to read and interpret neuro-psychological testing
  • grammar and writing skills
  • intermediate phonics
  • Latin roots
  • a mock tutoring session with evaluation and critique

Note: This is a certification-track course approved by the Academy of Orton Gillingham Practioners and Educators and taught by a highly experienced AOGPE Fellow.  Additional requirements of Associate Level training for those seeking certification through the Academy.

Once this course is completed, teachers must then teach a minimum of one hundred hours using the Approach over the course of an eight month period.  Ten formal observations, by a Fellow of the Academy, and a reading list are also required before applicants apply by completing an application, lesson plans, and a profile of their student to be submitted to the Academy.  Teachers will then be certified to work with groups of students and/or 1:1 in and outside of a school setting.

ADDITIONAL EXPENSES:

Your course fee, payable via Eventbrite, covers all aspects of the workshop.  Some teachers pursuing Associate Level accreditation by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators opt to purchase additional materials, pursue a practicum and/or purchase a membership.  Again, all of this is optional, although a practicum is required for certification at each level.  Additional expenses for those pursuing certification include:

- Practicum if working towards Associate accreditation through the Academy:  $1,750 or $875 if already accredited at the Classroom Educator Level
- Materials Fee:  $450 for Latin materials and $600 for basic materials if the trainee does not already own word and sentence cards*
- Application Fee/1st Year Membership for AOGPE:  $175
*While many teachers find these packaged resources convenient, others make them themselves.

Instructor: Dawn Nieman is a highly experienced Orton-Gillingham practitioner and Fellow of the Orton-Gillingham Academy.  She is the founder of Niemanville, through which she provides one-on-one tutoring for dyslexic students, trains teachers in public and private school and university settings, and creates teaching materials.

TRAVEL and PARKING

The Teacher Resource Center@LIU-Brooklyn is located two blocks from LIU’s campus in downtown Brooklyn. The TRC is within walking distance of major attractions like the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Barclay's Center arena, Mark Morris Dance Center and the new Polonski Shakespeare Center. We're surrounded by excellent shopping and countless restaurants in neighborhoods like Fort Greene, Williamsburg, Carroll Gardens, Park Slope and Brooklyn Heights, and just a couple of subway stops from Brooklyn Bridge Park or Lower Manhattan. In the summer, take advantage of an easy subway ride to Coney Island.

Hotels: There are several hotels within walking distance of the TRC.

  • Right around the corner: Sheraton Brooklyn, 228 Duffield St., 718-855-1900

  • 5 minute walk: NU Hotel, 85 Smith St., 718-852-8585

  • 10 minute walk or 2 min bus ride: NY Marriott at Brooklyn Bridge: 333 Adams St., 718-246-7000

Street parking is NOT available in this area. Please plan on using either public transportation or a parking garage. Note that the parking garage at Livingston Street and Hanover Place, at the end of our block, is now a construction site; look for others nearby.

The TRC is NOT located on the LIU campus. As with the faculty offices and a number of classrooms under the auspices of the School of Education, the TRC is located in separate building several blocks from Campus. The building is equipped with an elevator and accessible restrooms.
