Oli Watt: What?
March 1- April 4, 2020
Opening reception
Sunday, March 1 from 3 – 6 PM
The Riverside Arts Center Freeark Gallery and Sculpture Garden is pleased to announce an exhibition of Oli Watt’s artworks.
Oli Watt is a woodworker, printmaker, and sculptor whose works engage with popular culture, the everyday, and an egalitarian-experiential reality in their material sources. Through reforming the familiar, the works create an exciting, affective turn, and bring to the surface the inherent humor of the forms.
Watt received his BFA degree from The University of Florida at Gainesville; participated in the Visiting Student Program, Gesamthochschule Kassel Universität, Kassel, Germany; and received his MFA degree at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Printmedia at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
His extensive local, national and international exhibitions include The Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Spencer Brownstone Gallery, NY; Rocket Gallery, Chicago; The Terra Museum of American Art, Chicago and the 32nd Graphic Arts Biennial in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Watt’s work has been published in Art On Paper, Art US, The New Yorker, The New Art Examiner, and The Village Voice.
His artwork is included in many public and private collections, including: The British Museum, London, England; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; The Tate Museum Library, London; The Tweed Museum of Art, Duluth, Minnesota; and Microsoft Headquarters, Seattle, Washington.
This exhibition is curated by Stephanie Brooks. Brooks is the Gallery Director of the Freeark Gallery and Sculpture Garden at The Riverside Arts Center, and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Sculpture at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
For additional information and high-res press images, contact Freeark Gallery Director Stephanie Brooks at sbrooks[at]riversideartscenter.com.
This program is partially funded by the Illinois Arts Council Agency, the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, Riverside Township and donations from the Freeark family.
