OBESITY FORUM® 2019 - Scottsdale, AZ

The incidence of obesity has increased dramatically over the past 20 years and is considered to be an epidemic in the United States. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity now affects more than one-third (39.8%) of adults, as well as 20.6% of 12- to 19-year-olds in the United States. It is also a risk factor for some of the leading causes of preventable death, including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and certain cancers. Despite the availability of clinical practice guidelines and effective therapies, they are not utilized by many health care providers. The OBESITY FORUM® 2019 CME series aims to provide health care professionals with guidance on the appropriate use of therapies and strategies for delivering individualized care to patients with overweight or obesity, including in adolescents, via a multidisciplinary team. It will incorporate didactic presentations, as well as the patient perspective, interactive case-based discussions, and a segment on the most pressing questions asked at last year’s forums – Obesity Management FAQ, facilitating better application of information into clinical practice.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

• Incorporate effective screening, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with overweight or obesity.

• Adopt a multidisciplinary team approach to facilitate comprehensive management of the full range of health concerns in patients with obesity.

• Incorporate patient advocacy strategies into practice to improve shared decision-making in obesity management.

• Implement effective approaches for improving adherence to behavioral and lifestyle modifications among patients with overweight or obesity.

• Select appropriate patients for treatment with anti-obesity agents and tailor therapy based on the risk-benefit profiles of medications as well as patients’ characteristics.

• Identify and refer patients who are candidates for bariatric surgery, as well as provide comprehensive post-surgical follow-up to improve outcomes.

Target Audience

The intended audience for this activity is internists, general/family practice physicians, endocrinologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and other health care professionals involved in the management of patients with overweight and obesity.
