WHAT WE'RE FIGHTING FOR:
In 46 countries across the world women are striking on March 8th for a better world. In solidarity with the international women's strike, we are issuing a call for women in Oakland to organize ourselves against deportations, workplace harassment, out of control rent, broken healthcare, unlivable wages, discrimination, and police violence.

March 8th will be the beginning of a new international feminist movement that organizes resistance not just against Trump and his misogynist policies, but also against the conditions that produced Trump, namely the decades long economic inequality, racial and sexual violence, and imperial wars abroad.

>Rally, speakers, and art making at OGP from 5-6pm. We will then march at 6pm.

>Organize your friends or coworkers to march together. Make signs and banners that say who you are and what you're fighting for.

>Wear red!

>Bring pots and pans to make noise!

>Gender Strike is holding an event to shut down ICE at noon in San Francisco: https://www.facebook.com/events/853302148146251/

ACCESSIBILITY INFO:
An ASL interpreter will be provided, our planned march route is wheelchair accessable, and will move slowly. For the duration of the rally at Oscar Grant Plaza (wheelchair accessible), we will have food, water, and there will be kid engaging art making activities. National Lawyers Guild and street medics have been contacted.

The rally is intended to be a kid friendly space. When the march leaves, it is up to parents discretion if they would like to join. Please be advised this is a night time march.

I'd like to include tho Oakland rally in a round-up of Women's Day actions for the Bay Area Reporter. Can someone give me a quick comment about how many people attended and any notable speakers or other highlights? Was there a march, or just the rally at OGP? Many thanks! (liz@black-rose.com)

Looked like at least a thousand people at the rally to me. My favorite speaker was Denise Solis, who described herself as a queer Latina who is vice-president of the local service workers' union, who talked about sexual harassment faced by female janitors who work at night and are largely immigrants. She was great! I want her to be Labor Secretary someday! You can now find her among my Facebook friends if you want to get in touch with her for comment.

"Several thousand women, and a few men, gathered in downtown Oakland to mark International Women’s Day, 2017. Considering the small forces that did the organizing, the turnout was impressive. It was also partly a sign of the times. This event did not happen in a vacuum; it was part of a larger movement. And, as such, we should think about where that movement is headed…. because some people most definitely are. They have a goal – a final resting place, you could say – and a strategy. That is the liberal cabal that revolves around the Democratic Party and includes the union leadership and the nonprofiteers. And their goal, their final resting place, is to get out the vote in 2018 and beyond to elect more Democrats."

Does anyone have a list of speakers from last night?
Faith Tandoc
-- 09/03/2017 19:04
I will leave it up to other speakers if they want to name themselves, but I was the speaker for health care in front of the Uber building. I created a website to serve as a to-do list of how to get active and as a compilation of organizations and resources: http://beginswith.us/ This website is a project in the works, but hopefully will help some people who are looking to get started. If you want to support health care for all residents of California, please support the Healthy California Act: SB 562. http://www.healthycaliforniaact.org/home/ The grassroots organization that I volunteer with is Health Care for All - California (Alameda chapter; there are many chapters across the state): http://salsa3.salsalabs.com/o/50611/signup_page/sign-petition If you want to join a general activism group, come to Solidarity Sundays. The next meeting is this Sunday at the Perch Cafe: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1781982062065624/ If you don't live in the area, find a local chapter here: https://www.solidaritysundays.org/get-involved Feel free to get in touch with me.
