The lands of Navarene not been kind for you in the past months. Small-time jobs have kept you on your feet, but your funds are leaving you more quickly than you can pull them in, and you haven’t tasted a hardy meal in weeks.

After hours of deliberation, you decided to sign yourself on to the one job you’d been holding off on – an offer from a Navarene noble with ties to the Amber Papacy. The job: track down and apprehend an individual who has been mutated by a dangerous substance from deep underground. A reward sum of sixteen shins per person – plus a couple of free meals - will be delivered upon task completion.

You’ve heard warnings of making deals with nobles, but you find that the cries of your stomach and the lightness of your pockets are making a more convincing argument. You apply for the posting at the town square, and ready yourself for the uncertainty of the path ahead.

**The Setting**

Welcome to the Ninth World.
There have been eight previous worlds. You may refer to them as ages, eons, epochs, or eras, but it’s not wrong to think of each as its own individual world. Denizens of prior worlds shaped mountains, moved stars, turned ice to stone, and more. Each played host to a species whose civilizations rose to supremacy but eventually fell to dust.

The Ninth World is built upon the bones of the previous eight. Look to the horizon – is that a mountain, or a forgotten monument to a long-lost empire? Look to the skies – is that a cloud, or a dense swarm of nanomachines hurtling toward an unknown purpose? These wonders from worlds past are known by Ninth Worlders as the numenera, and your interactions with them will shape your legacy within The Ninth World.

**The Game**

At the table, Numenera focuses on maximizing player agency to encourage role-playing. Crafting, stealth, exploration, and communications are expanded upon as to make them appear as viable alternatives – rather than supplements – to direct combat encounters. Just as one player might select an ability that allows them to strike foes more easily when surrounded, another might select an ability that allows them to tell more convincing lies to groups of people, for example.

But perhaps the game’s biggest strength is its consistent pacing. From combat to climbing, from communications to crafting, there is no one element of the game with rules so complex that the wealth of dice rolls grinds the adventure to a halt. Fast, intuitive mechanics keep the game flowing from one segment to the next, offering a thrilling experience well-suited for beginners and experienced players alike.
