This roundtable and performance will be a dynamic interplay of race, music, healing, religion, and post-colonial theory inspired by the book, Is God Funky or What? Black Biblical Culture and Contemporary Popular Music authored by Dr. Theodore W. Burgh. The author, Ms. Toni Blackman, and Dr. Michael Viega will engage in a dialogue moderated by Dr. Kate E. Temoney.
DR. THEODORE W. BURGH (TEDDY) is an ethnomusicologist, musician, and Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religion at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. He earned an MA in Religious Studies from Howard University and an MA and PhD in Archeology from the University of Arizona.
TONI BLACKMAN is a social entrepreneur, cypher facilitator, and activist who was the first Hip Hop artist selected to work as a Cultural Ambassador with the US Department of State. She is currently with the Carnegie Hall Weill Music Institute and a fellow in the Echoing Green Foundation’s Thought Leadership Cohort.
Dr. MICHAEL VIEGA is an Assistant Professor of Music at the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University. His clinical and research experience includes the healing affordances of Hip Hop Culture, digital music cultures in music therapy, and trauma with youth from limited resource communities.
DR. KATE E. TEMONEY is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Religion at Montclair State University.
