The Cornel/Henry Art is pleased to present ‘mother series’ by Jennifer Georgescu.

Jennifer Georgescu (BFA, Watkins College of Art) is a photographer and mother based in San Diego. With a background in painting and photographic arts, she utilizes medium format film photography, installation, and digital technology. Her work describes instinctual aspects of humanity correlating to and differing from societal structuring. Her projects analyze dualisms in language, relationships, mythologies and control. Jennifer Georgescu is part of the Photolucida 2019 Critical Mass Top 200, the 2019 recipient of the John Chervinsky Scholarship of Griffin Museum of Photography, and the 2019 recipient of the William Male Foundation Award. Recent exhibitions include the Baldwin Photographic Gallery, Milwaukee Art Museum, Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Center for Fine Art Photography, and Vermont Center for Photography. Recent publications include Lenscratch, Aint Bad, Don’t Smile, the Missouri Review, Silvershotz, and SHUTR magazine.

She tells us: ‘In 2015, I became a mother. I was prepared for the grueling labor, and sleepless nights, but the loss of my sense of self can as a surprise. I had no time to think, and I began to feel like a shell of a person. My early days of motherhood were alienating and awful, as well as sentimental and dear. I began to see myself as defined only by a relationship. I felt that my son was an appendage of myself, the embodiment of self and other. It was hard to accept that he was a growing, changing person, while I was to remain forever split. When he is near my thoughts are entangled around him, and when I am away I cannot seem to be the person I was before. A child is how we remain on Earth; they are our legacies. As I see my son grow I feel my time begin to speed up; I feel my decay. When we think about birth we must realize our death. Motherhood is precious and raw, wonderful and dark.’

For this exhibition we are presenting thirteen of her most iconic photos from this series. This is her only solo show containing so many photographs of this series together. Her photographs have been shown across the US in multiple group shows but they have never been put together in the same space until now. We are inviting you to ponder about what motherhood implies. This deep and visceral interpretation of the joy and struggles endured by a new mother is surely to leave the viewer with an intense and radical experience. These conceptual, almost painterly dream-like photographs transform utterly personal experiences into universal ones that we can all relate to.

The exhibition will run from February 21 through March 29, 2020.
