Midwinter Grief Tending Ritual

Please join us for the February 23rd "Lean In - Grief Tending Ritual" on Capitol Hill (NEW LOCATION).

In these times, there is much to grieve, both personally and collectively. There are so few communities in this culture where our strong emotions, our deep grief, and our anger are welcome. In this way, our grief is so often compounded by loneliness and lack of support. This circle is an opportunity to gather as a “village” for the important work of releasing grief and healing our tender hearts.

Our time together will include talking circles, singing, ceremony, and sharing food. The heart of the evening is a ceremony inspired by the work of Sobonfu and Malidoma Some of the Dagara Tribe, who brought sacred teachings of community grief ritual to the West from their homeland of Burkina Faso Africa. Accompanied by steady drumming, we will guide participants on how to weave movement and sound into ceremony to express in a wordless way what’s in their hearts.
There is no grief too big or too small for our circle - from loss and change, for the earth and political climate, even passed through our lineage. Join us as we build community by coming together to embrace our grief and reclaim our joy.

• Early bird registration (on or before February 12th): $32 + fees
• Regular registration (after February 12th): $40 + fees
• We offer admission to this event by donation for black, indigenous and other people of color (see below for details)

Payment Policy:  

Please consider adding a scholarship donation when you register for the event. Admission fees and early bird registration to this event are priced to make it accessible and affordable, and pay a fair wage to event facilitators and organizers. We ask that you pay at the highest level that you can afford to do your part in making this event accessible to low-income people and people of color (scroll down to view our BIPOC policy). Really: recognizing our privilege and sharing our resources more equitably is an important skill if we are dedicated to village-building, healing, and justice.

BIPOC Policy: 

In the spirit of micro-reparations for slavery, racism, and the displacement of indigenous people, we offer admission to this event by donation for black, indigenous and other people of color. BIPOC can choose any amount they are willing and able to offer to attend, as we don’t presume any particular class status or financial situation. A $10 fee is charged as a deposit to hold a spot as space is limited, and this can be refunded at the event if needed for POC.

As people of European descent, the facilitators of this event recognize our privilege in having the opportunity to offer a platform for sharing grief work–a privilege and position ultimately gained at the expense of black and indigenous people, past and present. We recognize that we continue to benefit from the legacies of slavery, racism, genocide, and displacement, and acknowledge the pain that still exists from that legacy. We also acknowledge that this event is held in the traditional territory of native peoples.

We believe in the enormous power of Grief Work to aid in the ongoing process of healing ourselves, our communities, and beyond. We want the work to be accessible to all, especially those who have been disadvantaged to benefit the privileged. We realize that this policy is merely a gesture towards the need for much broader reparations and justice, and are open to feedback about how this policy can change and evolve over time. We are listening, and are committed to learning.

Cancellation Policy: We try to make participation affordable because we deeply believe in the importance of making this work available to all. To help manage affordability with the cost of renting the space, snacks, supporting materials, and fair wage to event facilitators and organizers, we are able to offer the following refund policy:

• Full refund - if cancellation received before the early bird date  
• Credit refund for future date - if cancellation received between the early bird date and 24 hours before the event
• No refund - if cancellation received within 24 hours of the event
