Dear Math Enthusiast,

We would like to invite your students to participate in the Middlementary Math Bonanza, a competition with tests for students in third through eighth grades (though younger students are welcome to participate in the third-grade division).  The contest will occur on April 20, 2019 at Bellevue College, with both individual and four-person team events in two grade levels 3-5 and 6-8. All tests were written by National Assessment & Testing, an organization that administers national math contests by e-mail.  Each test has been thoroughly proofed and contains problems in a broad range of topics and difficulties, to provide both confidence and challenges to students of all abilities.

Awards will be given to the top individuals in each grade based on an Individual Test consisting of thirty free-response problems to be answered in thirty minutes.  Awards will be given to the top four-person teams in each grade based on the sum of their scores on three team tests. The first team test is Mental Math, in which each team member will be asked to solve twenty printed problems in their head in fifteen minutes.  The two remaining team tests are collaborative topic-focused tests, in which the four team members will attempt to collectively solve twenty problems in fifteen minutes in the areas of Algebra & Probability and Geometry & Potpourri.

The registration fee to participate in this contest is $40 per team of four or $15 per individual.  If your school does not have these funds, you may be able to find support from parents, the PTA, or other outside organizations that will allow you to give your students this opportunity.  These fees make your students eligible to participate in the contests described above, eligible for the awards for those contests, and eligible for door prizes. In addition, you as the coach will receive electronic copies of all tests, answers, and solutions.  Activities will last from approximately 9:00 AM to approximately 3:30 PM, with a break for a pizza lunch.

To register teams and students for this contest, simply complete the eventbrite survey attached in this email. There will be small concessions at the event itself, but to order the pizza, please fill out the google survey link in this email.

Students should come with pencils or pens, prepared to have a lot of fun tackling interesting problems, but also prepared to answer fewer problems correctly than they would in class.

We look forward to seeing you!
