Mark Aspery wrote the book on blacksmithing (actually 3 books...). Now is your chance to get your head out of the book and learn directly from the master!
In this 2-day workshop scheduled for March 28 - 29, Mark will be teaching students how to forge a filing vise.
A filing vice is essentially an insert that fits into your normal post or machinist's vice, its purpose is to hold stock at an angle to allow for easier filing.
If you know Mark already, you know that he likes to teach fiddly projects. And while this is assuredly a fiddly and tricky project, students will learn leaps and bounds by going through the process!
The filing vice that you will be forging is an historical item – it was probably an apprentice or journeyman piece designed to show off some skills at the forge and bench – with the sharp back corners to the jaws, a recessed spring and a 3-knuckle hinge.
There are three ways to approach the buildup of the material needed for the jaws, upset, draw down larger stock or weld. We will try the weld, and if that doesn’t go so well in the gas forges, Mark will have some larger stock on hand.
Students will need to bring a sharp file, scribe, engineers square and hacksaw.
This is an advanced class. Students should have solid blacksmithing skills to be successful in this class. We recommend that students have taken all or at least some of the CBA Level I and II classes prior to signing up for this class. All students must have taken a Discovery class with us.
For reference, please refer to "The Skills of a Blacksmith, Volume II, Mastering the Fundamentals of Leaf-Work," Chapter 7 "The Filing Vice" pages 83-98.
This class will run from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm each day with a one hour break for lunch. Students must attend both days.
