How to Manage Difficult Behaviors in Autism

The SDSU Center for Autism and Developmental Disorders is hosting a talk on learning effective strategies to deescalate behaviors in kids with autism. Our guest, Daniel Lowery from the Psychiatric Centers of San Diego, will help parents identify common triggers that lead to behavioral escalation and what to do to prevent them. We will explore the energy cycle of behavioral escalation, how to identify each phase and how to respond appropriately with each phase. We will cover the most effective communication strategies for interacting with kids to prevent behavioral escalation and reduce escalation once a child has already in an excited state. There will be a Q&A at the end to help tackle tricky situations.

The newly formed BASE (Behavioral Autism Support Entity) Team within PCSD (2013) has added a behavioral component to the traditional psychiatric components for dealing with individuals primarily with autism and other related diagnoses. By Trolley: Take the Green Line to Alvarado Station. Cross Alvarado Road and turn right to walk towards Alvarado Court. Turn left onto Alvarado Court, walk a couple minutes,  and you will see 6363 Alvarado Court building on your right. 

By Car: If you are driving from 8 Freeway, get off at College Avenue towards San Diego State University. At the intersection, turn left onto East Campus Drive, and then immediately turn left ontp Alvarado Road. Then turn right onto Alavardo Court. You can park along the street or park in the parking lot just before building 6363 Alvarado Court.
